Big Goals are Supposed to be Hard

When we talk about big goals, we’re not talking about the everyday tasks you check off your to-do list. We’re talking about the ones that make you nervous. The ones that give you butterflies. The ones that, if you’re honest, feel a little scary.

For some, that goal might be walking across the room to strike up a conversation with someone new—or even someone you’ve avoided for years. For others, it’s bigger: making a career change, asking your boss for a promotion, or finally pursuing that thing you’ve been putting off for too long.

Whatever your “big goal” is, if it makes you uncomfortable, take heart—you’re on the right track.

Are You Uncomfortable? Good.

Discomfort is a sign of growth. Your body has a way of signaling truth before your brain can rationalize it. Think of it like a crystal ball. That tight stomach, the pounding heart, the uneasiness you feel? It’s your gut telling you something important: growth is near.

Change isn’t meant to be cozy. It’s supposed to stretch you. Sometimes it’s even painful. But that discomfort? That’s the price of transformation.

Nobody runs a marathon out of nowhere. It starts with one walk around the block. Nobody leaps from babyhood to sprinting across the playground. First there’s the wiggle, then the scoot, then the crawl, then the wobbly stand. Step by step.

The same is true for your goals. They don’t just happen overnight.

The Power of 1

So how does someone wake up 50 pounds lighter? How does someone build the relationship of their dreams? How does a career transform from stagnant to fulfilling?

It starts with 1.

  • 1%

  • 1 step

  • 1 act

  • 1 no

  • 1 yes

That’s how big things are built—one brick at a time.

I wanted to share this today, the first day of the month. Not because it’s October, or January, or any “special” date. But because every day is another chance to start. Every day is a reminder of how many opportunities we actually have.

The 1% Rule in Action

We often hear about wasted time, missed opportunities, and setbacks. It’s easy to get stuck in that narrative and retreat into comfort instead of growth.

But the truth is this: the 1% rule changes lives. It’s not just a motivational soundbite—it’s how real progress is made.

Think about retirement funds. No one saves a fortune overnight. It happens with steady, consistent deposits—1% at a time. Over time, the compounding is undeniable.

That’s how goals work too. 1 + 1 doesn’t equal 2 in this case. It equals more. MUCH more.

Because each small action compounds. Each yes (or no) builds on the one before it. And before you know it, those little uncomfortable steps add up to something extraordinary.

So Just Remember:

If your goal feels too big right now, good. That means it’s worth it. Don’t wait for the perfect day or the perfect version of yourself to begin. Today is good.

Start with 1.

Because 1% today means much more than 100% over time.
